Joyce Long's Transforming into Beauty, 2024
In this piece, I use soil and dead plants, blending them into the canvas to create a richly textured foundation that serves as a symbol of life cycles and renewal. Over these earthy materials, I paint with a limited palette of warm, vibrant hues, infusing the organic textures with a sense of vitality and brightness. The soil and plants, elements often deemed unwanted or discarded, gain new significance here as they become part of a visual story about finding beauty in the overlooked.
The contrasting soft, warm colours bring out subtleties within the textures, inviting viewers to consider the possibilities that lie within materials we might otherwise disregard. Through this transformation, the work explores themes of rebirth and resilience, showing that even in decay, there is potential for beauty and life, encouraging a reexamination of our connection to nature and its hidden elegance.
