Sherlee Choliluddin's Leaning Tower of Fatimah, 2024
Completed in 1846, (main prayer hall rebuilt in 1930s) this mosque (Masjid Al-Ḥājjah Fāṭimah) in located in Singapore’s Kampong Glam District has a main tower which leans slightly 6 degrees off centre due to moisture causing shifting of bricks and it being built on sandy soil. At the same time, it has an interesting mix architectural design of Islamic, European, and Malay influences. I really like the cultural mash up of the design of this building, which to me represent what Singapore is like, a mash up of people from different backgrounds and history. Even though I’ve lived in Singapore more than 30 years, it is historical buildings like this mosque which never fail to pleasantly surprise me.
Medium: Watercolor on 300gsm 100% cotton paper
